Waimanalo Youth & Family Collaborative

Goal: Involving the community in creating a stronger community for youth and their families, with programs, activities and places tailored to the community’s specific needs and character.

“Creating it FOR and WITH our community”

This collaborative was convened in order to facilitate community input in determining what kinds of activities, programs, and services are needed in order for youth and their families to overcome challenges they face and to build a healthy, safe, and sustainable community. The collaboration aims to build relationships between organizations, establish a common vision and mission, outline goals, and draft a plan to move the project forward.

Background: The Waimanalo Togetherness Group has been meeting since February 2007. It was initiated by the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center in an effort to strengthen collaboration amongst Waimanalo's youth and family service organizations and community members. Out of this effort, an idea for a “One Stop Youth Shop” emerged, based on a similar successful pr
oject in New Zealand. In September 2008 a representative from this service center in New Zealand, Lou Davis, came to share with the Waimanalo Togetherness Group their journey as a collaborative. Many Waimanalo organizations and community members desired to see something similar produced here in our community. Invitations to discuss and network efforts began in the following months. In January 2009, graduate students from Uh began facilitating a planning process for this Youth and Family collaborative and center.
